Learn the basics of hand-setting lead type in the style invented by gutenberg that revolutionized our history of media and communiation! This 5 week long intensive will teach you the basics and the tricks of the only form of hand printing that reproduces a true gradient. Lithography has been praised for centuries, since its invention in the 17th century, for its ability to produce rich blacks and the lightest of grays in crayon drawings or liquid tusche. Learn how to prepare and draw on aluminum lithography plates and experiment with pronto and photo plates. come with ideas and drawings, and leave with unique editions of your work. Manipulating copper plates is one of the oldest forms of fine-art printing, gaining popularity with the fine clear lines of Albrecht Durer and holding strong today. Learn how to prepare grounds, etch copper plates with ferric chloride, prepare paper and the press, ink plates and print. this three week class will prepare you to explore etching further, and send you home with an edition of your prints. The printshop welcomes its newest addition: A beautiful Rosin Box built by local carpenters James Kay and Misha Heil. Aqua-tint will be demonstrated and may be used in your projects. (aqua-tint puts a ‘tooth’ in the plate and allows for solid grays to accompany your etched lines. Printing in your closet is great – printing in drop-in hours is fabulous, but nothing beats a dedicated teacher showing you the tricks of a versatile and beautiful medium. The class will cover basic methods of acetate tracing, cut ruby lith, transparent color overlay, screen coating, registering, and editioning, as well as tips and tricks which keep the process clean, slick, and efficient. Students should expect to take home self printed items each week gaining competency in fabric and on paper, as well as focus on a final design and print of a poster project in at least two colors. Covering much ground in a short amount of time, students may need to take home assignments and make use of Open Shop hours to complete their work by the final class. The Community Printshop is excited to welcome students from Carver High-school to the studio for a free month-long program made possible by a grant from COX Communications. Students will learn the basics of fine-art and commercial screenprinting. this class is not open to the public, but if you would be interested in having shirts for your band/business designed and printed by our students, please e-mail: Mturner@louisianaartworks.org. Proceeds will support our fund to continue the program after the grant period, and keep it free for the students.

An exciting and meticulous advanced screen printing class , this class is not for the weak of heart or hand! Learn how to manipulate ruby-lith film to make beautiful hand-cut transparencies for screen printing. Experiment with transparent base to make color combination and leave with a beautiful edition. Students are expected to come with screen-print experience (interested beginners, consider taking Li’s intro class or attending open shop nights) and a finished drawing to work from. The first class will involve mixing colors, making color tests and practicing cutting the film (sharp knives will be available for borrow or purchase, or bring your favorite x-acto). Multi-Color Etching (one-plate printing a la poupé)

This method of color etching is used to achieve beautifully soft and dream-like colors, while retaining the sharpness and clarity of the etched line. The term comes from the french for ‘with the doll’: the tarlatan is scrunched up to the size of a doll’s head in order to wipe each color portion of copper plate separately. Etching experience helpful but not required, students should come to the first class with a line drawing on tracing paper. Learn the process of transfering a drawing to a plate, drawing with a stylus, etching with acid. Students will also learn how to use the Rosin Box to create tones. Learn the beautiful process to prepare a plate with anywhere from 2 to fifty colors (depending on your dexterity and patience), wipe and print on the etching press. copper provided. Of its four studios, The Louisiana ArtWorks’ Community Printshop is arguably its most beautiful! With twenty foot ceilings and huge windows along two walls there is abundant natural light. The shop has welcomed a new manager and is gathering a base of dedicated shop members to keep the shop open late, and humming with activity and classes.
